Kellis junior Johnathan Ornelas played for the Sandlot AZ Gold team for Class of 2018 players in the inaugural Wilson Premier Classic Sept. 15–18 at the Baltimore Orioles’ Minor League complex in Sarasota, Fla.
The new tournament featured some of the highest-level players from the 2017, 2018 and 2019 graduating classes.
Competitors at all levels were part of 14 elite national traveling teams invited to the event and there were separate tournaments by graduating class.
MLB scouts and college coaches from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC will also be among those in Sarasota to see how these players fare against top-level competition.
Sandlot AZ Gold finished 1-3 in pool play. Ornelas had one of two Sandlot hits in the opening 6-0 loss to Team Elite Prime from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and another in the second loss.
He walked three times in the Arizona team’s lone victory over Florida Burn Platinum.
Ornelas batted .427 with four homers and 21 RBI for the Cougars’ playoff team in the 2016 season. He also had a .951 fielding percentage and saw action as a relief pitcher.
